“Despicable Me” is a quality film that your kids will enjoy and you might too. It may very well earn an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. But coming out so close after “Toy Story 3″ makes it seem just too far behind Pixar to really stand out, says Kit Bowen.
M. Night Shyamalan’s new film “The Last Airbender” has some stunning visual effects, and could be the favorite for the Oscar in that category. But Andrew Payne says the movie – based on the TV show “Avatar” – fails at character development and struggles with its story.
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are back for “Eclipse,” which Kit Bowen says is the best of three Twilight films.
After winning an Oscar for “An Inconvenient Truth”, Davis Guggenheim is back with “Waiting for Superman”, taking a look at education. The film won the Audience Award at Sundance and is the early frontrunner for Best Documentary. Gene Williams saw the movie at the LA Film Festival.
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for the attempted summer blockbuster “Knight and Day.” After an exciting opening scene action sequence, the rest of the film is just a silly summer action flick, says Steve Neumann. It’s a decent escape for a hot summer day.
‘The A-Team’ knows what it is and doesn’t apologize for it, Katie Mae Peters says. It’s the perfect formulaic summer action flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The remake of the TV series stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel, and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
“Toy Story 3″ picks up right where the other two left off, and is another instant classic from Pixar, Kit Bowen says. It’s already the early frontrunner for Best Animated Film and has a chance at being the second consecutive Pixar film to be nominated for Best Picture, following “Up”.
Madeline Sackler’s new documentary “The Lottery” offers a poignant look into the problems facing African-Americans in today’s public schools. Rebecca Rose reviews this film which highlights four families desperately hoping for their children to enter a Harlem charter school.
This weekend, the new Duplass brothers film “Cyrus” comes out starring Jonah Hill, former Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, and past nominees John C. Reilly and Catherine Keener. Steve Neumann went to an advanced screening of the movie and found it enjoyable and says it feels real.
While initially skeptical, Kit Bowen found herself enjoying the new “Karate Kid” movie. Bowen praises the performance of young Jaden Smith, who breaks out in this film, starring alongside Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson. The movie is a bit long, but it has some nice scenery.
