In order to better explain the rules, we have written it up in the form of a Q&A:

What is this?

AwardsPicks.com is a web site that enables users to engage in competitions based on their picks for various awards shows, such as the Oscars, Emmy's Grammy's, etc.

Which awards show owns you?

None. We are not affiliated with any company that organizes awards shows. We are completely independent.

So how does this work, for say, the Oscars?

Basically, you get a group of friends, family, or co-workers together. One person is the designated group leader and invites others. The group leader determines the scoring system. Each person then makes their Oscar picks, and you get points for each pick you make correct. Usually the point system is weighted so you get more points for picking Best Picture correctly than Best Art Direction. Whoever has the most points after the Oscars are over, wins the group.

Sounds like fun, but what if I can't find people to do this with me?

We do have numerous public groups that you can enter.

What is the difference between a group and a game?

One group can have multiple games. A group is you and your friends, relatives, or co-workers. You can always add or subtract members of a group.

A game is for a specific awards show. Your group can can be involved with our Oscar game, Golden Globe game, Grammy game, etc. All of these scoring systems are customizable with a default scoring system in the beginning.

What are my options for scoring systems?

The group leader can basically allocate however many points they want for each category. Some choose to make all categories equal. Some might weight the big awards like Picture, Director, Actor, and Actress more heavily. Others might choose to ignore smaller categories like Live Action Short or Documentary Short Subject altogether. We do offer a default scoring system that group leaders can use if they so choose.

What if there's a tie?

The first tiebreaker is most categories picked correctly. The second tiebreaker is determined by whichever user most closely guesses the length of the show.

How many people can be in a group?

As many as you want.

How many groups can I be in?

As many as you want.

I didn't see any of these movies. How am I supposed to do well?

You don't have to see any movies to make educated guesses. Numerous periodicals report on favorites and underdogs for awards shows.

Is this gambling?

No, this is not gambling. That is illegal on the internet, and we don't facilitate the transfer of any money through our site. You are simply comparing your awards show picking prowess against others.

So if this is not gambling, then how do you make money?

We're not really doing this for money. We just think awards shows and entertainment games are fun. And we know lots of people feel the same way we do, and would like some sort of easy computerized way to keep track of their picks and compare them with others. That being said, we might sell a little advertising while we're at it.

What is the Red Carpet blog?

That's a blog we have which covers awards shows. We have a few "experts" who have committed to write for it.
